This wonderful shot from Sammy shows a swan against a perfectly reflective Lake Kussharo. (© Sammy Six)
Evening is the best time to see the flying squirrels - guides and guests braved the chilly forest park for a chance at this photography opportunity.
Next up was Lake Kussharo, where we were able to get close to the beautiful Whooper Swans.
Photographers are willing to lie in uncomfortable positions for hours for the right shot! (It helps that the sand on the shores of Lake Kussharo are warm!)

Time for a quick group shot at Lake Mashu before making our way to our next stop!
From Lake Mashu, we moved on to Lake Furen. The frozen lake surface is a bustling point of attraction for all kinds of birds in the winter months.

An early start put our guests on the waves to capture shots of the Steller's Sea Eagle from a small boat - a highlight of the trip for many.

Hattie wanted to re-do the crane portrait she took several years ago and that we used as this tour's hero image... here is her attempt! (© Hattie Hirasawa)
After moving on from Rausu, we headed to Tsurui for the Red-crowned Cranes.
Art captured this beautiful shot of the cranes performing their iconic "dances" - with an audience, too! (© Art Teranishi)

Not all of the birds we encountered on this tour were for photographic purposes...
